Manage Stress - De-Clutter Your Home

Sometimes in order to manage stress, you just have to make seemingly small adjustments to your lifestyle.

Your home should be a restful and peaceful refuge from the stresses and challenges of everyday living.  Unfortunately, many times that’s not the case.studio reorganized :: rydding pågår
Do you feel like your house is never quite clean enough?  Do you feel like you’ve outgrown your current home because of all the stuff you’ve accumulated over the years? It may be time to make a few changes…

Reduce the Clutter
Do you have “stuff”–or does your “stuff” have you?  A bunch of clutter requires a lot of time and maintenance.   This places unnecessary demand on you that in turn produces stress in your life.  Eliminate the clutter—get rid of the stuff you don’t need anymore.  Give it to charity and help others while you reduce stressful demands on your time.

Go through your home room by room and take a critical look at the things you could do without.  Throw away or give away at least two clutter items from each room.  Make a commitment to remove extra clutter once a month or, at the very least, once every other month.  This will not only de-clutter your home, it will de-clutter your mind and help manage stress.

Buy Less
Buy only the things that you need, don’t binge shop to reduce stress or depression.  It only adds to the problem instead of alleviating it.  Before you buy that wok or 12 piece fondue set, think about how often you would actually use those items. Get rid of duplicate items in your home that serve the same purpose—and for heaven’s sake don’t replace them.

Perfectionism Has to Go
Unless you have a full time housekeeper or your home is going to be featured in “Home and Garden”, “country clean” will have to do.  What’s “country clean”?  It’s somewhere between “white glove clean” and “filthy”.   Accept the fact that clean is good enough and save the obsessive cleaning  for special occasions and the change of seasons.  Remember that the homes featured in magazines look great because no one actually lives in them.

Tame that Clothes Horse
Buying clothes and shoes that you don’t need is another sort of clutter addiction that can quickly get out of control. Clothing requires washing, mending, pressing and dry cleaning.  A good rule of thumb is to go through your wardrobe seasonally and if you didn’t wear it last season, give it away to someone who can use it.

If you have a cluttered closet, it’s harder to decide what to wear and it’s sometimes even difficult to find the piece of clothing you need.  Too many choices and difficulty finding what you’re looking for wastes time and becomes stressful.

If organizing your home is overwhelming and stressful to you, ask a friend who enjoys organizing things or hire an organizational consultant to work with you.  Once your home is organized, it’s much easier to keep it that way.

These are just a few ways to manage stress by uncluttering your home to make it the peaceful refuge you need when trying to reduce the stress in your life.

Oh, and when you’re through organizing your home—move on to your office!
