Reduce Stress - Just Say No!

Considering the everyday pressures that most of us face, it’s vitally important to find ways to reduce stress and anxiety so that our physical and emotional health remain in tact.

Let’s face it, most of our schedules are already overwhelming. Pressures at work and home make it difficult to strike the perfect balance that allows you find much, if any, time to relax.

And still, we take on more responsibilities. It’s time to “fess up” to the fact that you might be your own worst enemy by inviting stress into your life via “over commitment”.

Do your siblings and parents turn to you when they need support? Do your friends call upon you to lend an ear to their problems? Are you the carpool mom that everyone turns to when they need a last minute stand in?

If this is the case, you probably have a hard time saying “no”, unless you can really come up with a good excuse. But what happens if you just don’t want to do something? Do you speak up? If you’re a “giver” who constantly gets taken advantage of, probably not. You can’t really rely on your family and friends to realize when your plate’s too full – that’s up to you, and sometimes it seems next to impossible to subtly convey this message to those around you.

Can’t they see the stress this puts you under? Probably not, they’re to wrapped up in their own drama at the moment—after all, that’s why they lean on you, right?

It’s a wonderful thing to be generous and giving of yourself, but if it’s causing you too much stress and anxiety because you can never find time to relax and unwind, then it’s becoming a detriment to your physical and mental health.

Are relationships are your top priority in life? That’s very admirable, but you’ll have to find a way to put yourself at the top of the list and let everyone else wait in line or you’ll end up with nothing left to give – and no emotional resources of your own to deal with your own times of stress.

Caregivers are wonderful and self-less people, but being the caregiver of the family means you have to take care of yourself first. You’ll then be in the best position to meet other people’s needs when called upon.

Unfortunately, some people are “takers” by nature and they will take advantage of you knowingly – because they’re too lazy to do anything to help themselves. Run—do not walk—away from these people! They will pull you down with them every time—don’t let this happen!

You’re actually enabling them to stay in the “emotional pit” they’re in by rescuing them all of the time. One reason you may be susceptible to rescuing the same person over and over again is because you may be easily accessible. Don’t be so available—just say ‘No!”. You’ll probably be doing this sort of person the biggest favor ever! They might have to make an effort to take care of themselves for a change—which will give them a boost of self-confidence like you never could.

Do yourself a favor to reduce stress, when you’re trying to relax, turn off the computer, shut off the cell phone, and be “unreachable” as long as you need it. If you’re shopping or dining out, you don’t need to be interrupted by someone else’s stress – not when you’re trying to manage your own!
