Signs of Stress – Are You A “Stress Stuffer”?

Do you sometimes feel like your head is going to explode?  You’re not alone—almost every one of us ignore the signs of stress we experience every day and allow it to build up until we feel like our heads are going to explode.  Unfortunately, stifling stress and anxiety day after day can cause significant damage to our physical, mental and emotional health over time. 

What are some of the negative effects of pent up stress and anxiety?  Here are just a few:

  • Recurring headaches
  • Digestive and stomach issues
  • Nagging back aches
  • Depression
  • Forgetfulness or foggy thinking
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Eczema and other skin conditions
  • Heart disease
  • Autoimmune diseases

Most of us have been “trained” to ignore the signs of stress and, thus, have difficulty releasing stress.  We have to acknowledge stress before we can truly release it. 

Constant stress is NOT a normal part of life that has to be endured.  We must change this belief system and quit cheating ourselves out of the joy of daily living. 

It’s time to take action and identify some “stress busters” that will effectively diffuse pent up stress.  Here are a few simple suggestions:

  • Enjoy nature—take a long walk on a nearby nature trail or work in your garden.
  • Take time for lunch and a movie with a good friend.
  • Curl up with that “best seller” that’s been gathering dust on your nightstand.
  • Listen to music.
  • Take a long hot bath.
  • Take time to play with your pet.
  • Break a sweat–try yoga.  It’s a great work out and effective stress reliever.

Make a point to take part in one of these stress busting activities each day—or be creative and come up with some “stress busters” of your own! 

Remember, if you’re a “stress stuffer”, you’re asking for trouble.  Though it may take effort and commitment to find suitable stress release outlets, it’s something that must be done for the sake of your health and well-being.
