Stress and Anxiety – Could Sleep Deprivation Be The Cause?

Sleep deprivation has proven to be one of the major causes of stress and anxiety in most of our lives.  Trouble is, stress and anxiety itself can also be the cause of sleep deprivation.  Which came first—the stress or the insomnia?  Sometimes it’s impossible to tell.  The point is, lack of sleep can be very detrimental to your over all health—period.

It’s vitally important that you get to the bottom of the problem so your insomnia and stress don’t continue “feeding” off of each other.  Otherwise, you’re headed for a serious downward spiral.

Something as simple as a cat nap during the day could be a great help in reducing stress and anxiety.  It’s funny, as children, we dreaded our daily naps and didn’t “go down” without a fight.  As an adult, the thought of an afternoon cat nap sounds like an absolute luxury! 

Though some cultures count a mid-day snooze as the “norm”—if you’re a corporate employee, your boss may have a few objections to your stealing away for an afternoon siesta.  Jobs are scarce enough these days—we probably shouldn’t push the envelope.

“Power naps”, as some corporations call them, can be very energizing and are likely to make you feel more alert, which usually leads to better job performance and the ability to handle daily stress.  Some major corporations, like Nike, are encouraging employees to put “snoozing” on their to-do list—how cool is that!?! 

This only proves the positive impact that a 20 minute power nap can have on job performance and productivity—not to mention the stress relieving potential.  After a short snooze, you’re more likely to respond instead of react when dealing with stressful situations such as a “dig” from a co-worker, an argument with your spouse or a crying baby.

Other benefits include increased motivation and the ability to stay “cool” under pressure.  You’ll also be less likely to over-react to little problems or nagging interruptions to your daily schedule if you’re rested and equipped to handle whatever comes your way.

So, do yourself a favor, and give it a try.  If you work a 9 to 5 job, get away from your desk find a quiet place—even if it’s your car—and indulge yourself in a power nap.  Be sure to set your watch alarm or cell phone alarm so that you don’t oversleep.  If you’re a stay at home mom, try to nap when the kids are napping or watching a video.  It may take some creative planning, but it’s worth doing if it relieves your stress and improves your health.

Just imagine…a 20 minute daily snooze may be all it takes to reduce moodiness, stress and the “grouchies”!  Don’t under estimate it—sleep deprivation that leads to stress and anxiety can hold us back physically, emotionally and professionally in ways we might never imagine.
