Stress in the Workplace – Don’t Be Afraid to Make a Change!

What happens when your alarm goes off in the morning? Do you dread crawling out of bed and going to work? You may be one of the lucky ones who works from home—but is stress making you wish you could pull the covers over your head and stay in bed all day?

Stress in the workplace is a very common reality for many people and especially in those who suffer from job performance anxiety and depression. Job stress can result from many sources– from the fact that you can’t stand your associate or co-workers to issues involving a controlling boss who makes you feel guilty for going on vacation even though you really, really need it.

One of the worst things about stress in the workplace is that it very often spills over into your personal and home life. You can’t really complain to your boss, so you come home and take it out on those that you love the most.

Want to find a way to cure job stress?

  1. Either find happiness in what you’re currently doing or find another job.  If you continue just “sticking it out” in a stressful job, you’re doing yourself and your boss a disservice. Plus, you’re risking burn-out, which will lead to additional emotional and physical problems possibly including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity. Sometimes “staying put” for security’s sake just isn’t worth it…
  2. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance from co-workers. If you feel overwhelmed and it’s just not humanly possible to meet your current deadlines, ask an associate or co-worker to help you out. Then…don’t forget to return the favor when they need help.
  3. Focus on time management and organizational skills.  When job stress begins closing in on you, force yourself to stop, take a deep breath and get organized. Learn to prioritize tasks according to importance, manage your time effectively and make an effort to keep your work area neat and orderly. It will give you a sense of calm and control—even if your workload seems overwhelming. I recommend reading Getting Organized: Improving Focus, Organization and Productivity. It’s a relatively short book with concise “bited sized” tips on getting organized on the job–very practical and helpful.
  4. Practice optimism and develop a positive outlook on life. Learn to shake off small irritations that you encounter throughout the day. Just let it go—immediately, and you’ll be spared further and unnecessary stress.
  5. Dust off your dreams. It may sound corny—but have you tried following your dreamslately? What are you passionate about? Is there ANY way to make money from it? Could you start a small home business on the side and slowly build it up? I love the old saying—“If your job involves something you’re passionate about, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

If you decide to switch jobs or careers, make sure to look for your “dream” job that will offer fulfillment for you in terms of your interests and passions, as well as appreciation for a job well done. Don’t be afraid to ask questions during the interview process and try to hold out for a job that “means” something to you. Be assertive in voicing your expectations for your new position.

Should you decide to stay with your old job, make a goal of pursuing a side-line home business that involves one of your passions. You never know but that you could end up being your own boss! Dare to dream!!

Recommendation:

Read 48 Days to the Work You Love.  It will help you stop working a J-O-B and help you find the work you love.  One reviewer of the books says:

Prepare to have your world rocked as Dan uncovers and lays out what is wrong with “work” in today’s world, what has changed and why people are sacrificing their spiritual and physical health to daily jobs that have no meaning in their lives, and the path to a true, meaningful, fulfilling and life-rewarding vocation.

Lithium Orotate is an all natural supplement (unlike prescription synthetic lithium prescribed by doctors) that has proven very effective for taking the edge off of chronic stress and anxiety. I have personally used it for the past couple of years and find it very helpful in lifting the stress and lightening my mood. It does not cause any drowsiness or foggy thinking at all–in fact it seems to sharpen my mind and give clarity of thought. Highly recommended!

Warning: If you are currently on prescription anti-depressants, you must work with your doctor to safely discontinue use, if desired. Do not abruptly discontinue use of such medications as this could cause severe withdrawal effects.
