Stress Tips – Relaxation Training Takes Stress Away

I don’t know about you, but I never thought I’d have to train myself to relax.  However, this is one of the most important stress tips to utilize if you’re going to control stress in your life. 

Take this scenario for example.  You’re late for a meeting with your boss—we all know traffic never cooperates when we’re trying to make a meeting.  You dash into your office only to practically run into your boss who is more than a little irritated that you’re late.  You try to collect yourself and focus on the meeting at hand, but your chest is tight and your heart feels like it’s going to pound out of your chest—it couldn’t be a heart attack…could it?

Luckily, it’s not a heart attack…this time.  It is, however, a warning that you are in stress overload. 

You’ve been advised more than once by your doctor to look into relaxation training to eliminate your stress.  Relax?  Who has time to relax?  On the other hand, who has time for a heart attack?  Giving relaxation training a shot is looking better and better at this point.

At first, “relaxation” isn’t very easy to achieve.  We’re all so used to living with stress each day, we don’t have a clue how to “stop the madness” and relax. 

Once you learn and incorporate effective relaxation techniquesinto your life, you can practice them wherever you go and at almost any time.

Take a Hike…or a Short Walk
Sometimes just walking away from a stressful situation for a short while will help clear your head and lower your stress level.  Try to find a quiet place, preferably outside in the fresh air—though an empty office, bedroom or your car will do in a pinch.  Stretch while taking a few deep breaths through your nose completely filling your lungs with air and exhaling through your mouth.  Sometimes just a momentary change of focus will make an “insurmountable” and stressful situation more…surmountable. 

Get Perspective
Take a minute to put the stressful event or person in perspective and tell yourself you can and will rise above the stress and handle the situation appropriately.  And don’t forget to breath…

Get a Vision
When stress starts closing in, visualize a peaceful beautiful place or relaxing activity in your mind.  Remind yourself that “this too shall pass” and while the stress may make you feel out of control—you are strong and IN CONTROL of the situation.  And, oh yeah, don’t forget to breath…

Have Fun
Do something that makes you feel carefree just for the fun of it.  Go to the park on a pretty day and walk barefoot in the grass.  Stop by a driving range and “hit a few” to release some pent up stress.  Wander slowly through an art exhibit, study the artwork and ask yourself what it “says” to you.  Sound corny?  Maybe, but at least it’ll get your mind off your stress.

Relaxation is a learned skill for many people and doesn’t come naturally.  Once you learn to manage your stress level, continue with the relaxation training.  Make it a way of life or you’ll end up in stress overload again and again…and again.
