What Is Stress – Do You Recognize It When It Hits?
What is stress? Simply put–stress is a fact of life. If you’re breathing right now, you’ve experienced stress on some level—and perhaps on many levels. Coping with stress and the underlying pressures of daily life is a skill we’ve all got to acquire if we want to stay healthy and enjoy life!

Stress is both a physical and psychological reaction to circumstances that interfere with our normal sense of well being.
When our emotional stability or physical safety is threatened, our body kicks into defense mode and automatically goes into what’s commonly known as a “fight or flight” reaction. Our heart rate quickens, we breathe faster and our muscles tense up. Our every sense is on high alert.
This physical response to stress is supposed to be a source of support and protection. However, in today’s world, most of us are more prone to psychological stress rather than physical stress. Taking care of elderly parents, job demands or an argument with a loved one are all considered stressful situations. However, none of these psychological situations should drive us into a physical “fight or flight” mode.
However, whether we’re stressed over such things as personal finances, a troubled relationship or our ailing economy, our inner alarm goes off and our bodies shift into overdrive.
These days, most of us are over committed and juggle schedules that are nearly impossible to keep. The resulting stress and worry tends to cause us to over-react to normal daily challenges.
But the trouble with an over active stress response is that it becomes more difficult to shut it down.
Once the stressful event is over, your breathing should normalize, your heart rate should slow and those tight muscles should relax. This isn’t the case when we’re constantly exposed to pressure and stress.
Our bodies forget how to shut off the stress hormones or adrenalin when the crisis is over. This eventually affects our physical well being and leaves our bodies vulnerable to several health problem such as heart disease, mental fog, various infections, weight problems, insomnia and depression–just to name a few.
What is stress? As you can see, it’s something we all deal with on a daily basis. And because of the harm it can cause us, we must learn positive and effective ways to reduce its impact on our lives.
