Workplace Stress Can Make You Accident Prone!
Don’t feel bad on those days that you feel clumsy and unable to do anything right. Statistics from almost every employment industry are in – one of the most potentially harmful effects of workplace stress has proven to be accidents on the job.
Let’s face it, when we’re stressed out, our thoughts are scattered our brain is foggy and we become unable to focus clearly on the task at hand. Even the most mundane daily tasks on the job may present a potential danger when we’re distracted by stress.
Our brains are not designed to be on constant “stress overload” and will eventually begin to “malfunction” if stress is not relieved.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tells us that:
- 25% of employees consider their jobs to be a great source of stress.
- 26% have experienced burnout on the job.
- 40% of employees consider their duties on the job to be significantly stressful.
- 75% of employees believe that today’s on-the-job stress is significantly worse than the stress experienced by employees of the previous generation.
Do those statistics ring true with you? Is your job the main source of the stress in your life? If so, take heart, you’re not alone. Most of us in the workforce experience workplace stress to some degree.
There are steps you can take each day to prevent and alleviate stressful situations that can lead to accidents. Here are just a few stress relieving tips:
- Slow down and double check each step of the task in which you’re currently engaged.
- Study any and all safety precautions of new or rarely used equipment you are expected to operate. Even if you feel confident in your abilities to operate the equipment—when you are under stress your brain can become foggy and easily distracted.
- If you feel the task is too much for you, don’t be afraid to ask for assistance from co-workers.
- Have a colleague or co-worker double check the procedure for you.
- If you feel stressed, don’t take on a new and unfamiliar task or operate new equipment if at all possible. During times of stress, your brain will not retain new information easily.
- Don’t hesitate to take a break from a task if you become distracted by stress. Your mind and body may need a short break so that you can re-gather focus to complete the task at hand. Walk away, take some deep breaths and do a couple of stretches.
Do yourself and your co-workers a favor and take the above precautions when you’re under stress. Workplace stress shouldn’t be something you “tough out” in order to prove your worth as an employee.
